Reuse Is a Community Effort: Local Partners for Items We Can’t Take

At the ArtSHAC, we are all in on creative reuse, circulating supplies and items and keeping them out of the landfill. However, there are some items our store cannot accept. To make this more sustainable for everyone, we’ve compiled a local resource list of places around town that do accept what we can intake.

Furniture, Household Items, and Clothing

Goodwill accepts many gently used items and clothing, although comprehensive lists can be found on their websites. There are several locations scattered throughout Winston-Salem to drop off your donatable items.

Tile and building supplies

Habitat for Humanity takes in building supplies and unopened boxes of tile and other products needed for home improvement. However, you should always call ahead to see if they are available to take in your items at this time.
Non-Art, Gently Used Books
The ArtSHAC only accepts vintage and art books.

The Junior League of Winston-Salem accepts gently used children's books, but a call ahead (linked above) is necessary to donate. The Junior League also has two donation drives, in the fall and spring.

Though they don’t take everything, you can “sell” your gently used books, CDs, movies, or any media, music, or sound equipment you can think of to McKay’s, for store credit or cold hard cash. Anything that they don’t buy, you can donate to the donation bins for books outside the store. A comprehensive list of what they intake can be found on the site linked above.

On Valentine's Day weekend, Bookmarks is having its annual used book drive, where you can drop off or buy used books. The profit all goes to supporting community literacy programs.
1700 Ebert St
The Shepards Center also has an annual used book sale to both donate and make purchases at, in May.
Old Medication and Medical Supplies
The Senior Services center accepts some items like wheelchairs or crutches, but be sure to call ahead to see what needs they have currently.
Both drugstore chains accept medications, supplements, lotions, inhalers, pet meds and liquids.
*A note about used pill bottles
Currently, there are no Winston-Salem organizations accepting empty pill bottles, and they cannot be recycled. If you have any questions about this, or any ideas on how to start reusing these, let us know!
Animal Needs

The Humane Society of Davie County accepts blankets, dawn detergent, paper towels, trash bags to help out all the furry friends looking for a home.
Miscellaneous

This dry cleaning store takes back hangers and dry cleaning bags.

Harris Teeter has a program to take back their plastic bags to recycle them.

Omnisource offers scrap metal recycling for the public.
